HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk sends both outside receivers vertical on a crossing release to clear out the corners and safeties while the offensive line shows pass protection before releasing to set up a screen wall for the tailback. The two inside receivers cross underneath at the second level to occupy linebackers and hold the middle of the field, and the HB slips out of the backfield to the left behind the developing wall of blockers. This is a screen pass designed to beat aggressive man coverage and blitz packages, with the primary read being an immediate check to the HB in the flat once the linemen release, banking on speed and blocking angles rather than a downfield progression.
Defensive Reads
Key the linebacker depth and hand placement immediately after the snap, if they crash upfield or widen out on blitz paths, the screen has room to develop. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a lurk zone near the line of scrimmage, since that player can jump the screen route and blow up the timing. Man coverage with corners locked on the vertical releases up top is a green light for this play because it removes defenders from the screen lane entirely. Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells with disciplined linebackers who stay square and read the backfield are the biggest counter, they can sit on the flat and squeeze the blocking wall before it sets. If the defense shows a heavy blitz package pre-snap with safeties rotating down into the box, expect the screen to hit for explosive yardage since numbers will be light on that side.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you diagnose blitz pre-snap, especially versus nano blitzes or overload pressure looks that bring extra defenders off the edge, since the screen turns their aggression against them. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are creeping toward the line or showing blitz indicators, the slip screen has a much higher hit rate. Use your hot route menu sparingly here, the design already floods the underneath zones with crossers, so focus pre-snap motion on identifying if the defense is in man or zone rather than changing routes. Pair this with HB Base or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to sell run tendencies, then dial up the slip screen once the defense starts keying run fits. Avoid calling this into disciplined zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers sitting in underneath zones, since they can sit on the screen and blow it up before the wall forms.
