Breakdown

Mtn Double Post lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk with a jet motion man crossing the backfield pre-snap before releasing on a shallow out to the flat. On the play side, two receivers stack vertical post routes at different depths, creating a natural high low read that stresses one half of the field, while the backside receiver runs a deep corner or vertical to hold the safety. This is a man beater and cover 2 beater that also carries a cover 4 tag, since the double post combo works to split the deep safeties and the underneath corner route occupies the flat defender. The primary read progression starts with the inside post for the seam window, then works to the outside post if the safety jumps the shallow route, with the flat motion man as the checkdown against blitz or if both posts are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and free safety depth before the snap, if they are aligned at deep half with no rotation this is a cover 2 shell and the double post is designed specifically to attack that structure. Track the flat defender or slot corner reaction to the pre-snap motion, if he trails the motion man across the field you are almost certainly facing man coverage and the double posts should win against any single deep defender. Key the linebacker who spins with the motion, a lurking linebacker who sits underneath the inside post can jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long, so use pump fake or eye manipulation before committing. Cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined deep defenders and a robber safety in the middle of the field can shut this play down by squeezing the post routes, so be ready to check down to the flat route rather than force the post window. Blitz packages that send extra pressure off the edge opposite the motion will test protection quickly, so know your hot route or check the flat route as a fast outlet against pressure looks.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a strong indicator of man coverage and can key on the double post for a big play. Against two high safety shells, target the inside post first since the double post concept is built specifically as a cover 2 beater that splits the safeties before they can rotate over the top. If you see a single high safety or cover 3, expect the corner route to occupy him and look to the flat route on the motion man for a quicker, safer completion. This play works best on second or third and medium situations where the defense may sit in zone, and pairs well in a play calling sequence with Mtn Y Stick or Mtn Bench Curls to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays off similar formation motion. Hot route the backside corner route into a deep out if you are facing heavy cover 4 matchup zone, this gives you a natural sideline breakup for the sticks concept and keeps the double post as your primary shot.
