Slot Cross is a man beater out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk that attacks the middle of the field with a crossing route combo designed to create natural traffic against man coverage. The slot receiver runs a deep cross underneath a clearing route while the outside receivers occupy the corners on vertical or intermediate stems, and the backfield stays home in a pass protection scheme to give the quarterback a clean pocket. Primary read progression starts with the slot crosser working from the numbers to the opposite hash, then works out to the flat or comeback route on the boundary if the crosser is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the ideal shell for this concept since the crosser will consistently separate against trailing defenders Watch for a linebacker sitting in a hook zone or a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle since that will jump the crossing route in Cover 3 or Cover 4 matchup zones Blitz packages that bring interior pressure without a spy will collapse the pocket before the crosser reaches the opposite hash, so check protection numbers pre-snap Cover 2 shells with safeties sitting high can rob the crosser late, so be ready to check down to the flat or comeback route on the boundary If the slot cornerback bails into a soft zone drop at the snap, expect a robber technique underneath and consider working the outside vertical instead of forcing the crosser

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot cornerback since press man or tight bump coverage tells you the crosser will win quickly against a rub from the release

Use this play on second and medium or third and medium when defenses are still respecting the run and linebackers have not sunk deep into zone drops

If the defense shows a two high shell pre-snap, hot route the backside outside receiver into a skinny post to attack the vacated middle behind the crosser

Pair this call with Slot Outs or Quick Slants earlier in a drive so the defense starts jumping the crosser, then punish that overaggression with a play-action shot off the same formation like PA Cross

Motion the H back into a stack alignment before the snap to disrupt man coverage assignments and buy the slot crosser extra separation at the top of the route
