Hitch Seam

Look for two high safeties pre snap, this tells you the defense is likely in a form of zone that leaves the seams open before rotation. If the corners are playing tight man press, expect the seams to get contested early so be ready to layer the throw or move to the hitch. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals he can undercut the seam throw so hold the ball an extra beat. Blitz heavy defenses with a lurking safety in the middle of the field will jump the seam routes, so check for a nickel or dollar blitz package before the snap and be ready to check down to the drag. Cover 3 shells with a deep middle defender are the toughest matchup for this play since that safety can rob both seams simultaneously.
