Breakdown

Mtn Z Spot is a classic Spot concept out of the mountain (bunch) alignment, designed to attack zone coverage with a high low read on the strong side while a backside dig or cross gives you a man beater outlet. The Spot combination stacks a corner route, a hitch, and a flat route underneath it to flood one third of the field, forcing zone defenders to choose between the flat and the hole shot. Your primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits, throw the hitch sitting in the window behind him, and if he widens, hit the flat route for a quick underneath gain, working back to the backside breaking route as your third option against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender immediately after the snap since his leverage tells you whether the hitch or flat throw is open in the Spot concept. Watch for a user controlled defender flying downhill on the flat route, which is the biggest threat to disrupting your first read and forces you to reset to the hitch or backside breaking route. Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells are where this play shines because the flat to hitch stack overloads the underneath zone defender. Man coverage with an overplayed underneath defender near the bunch can bait you into a pick six look, so respect the backside dig or cross as your answer against Cover 1 or Cover 0 man beaters. Disguised zone blitzes with the flat defender walked up pre-snap should push you to get the ball out on time to the hitch before the underneath window closes.

Usage Tips

Check the safety depth pre-snap because two high shells open up the corner route sitting behind the flat defender while single high tells you to lean on the backside dig or cross against man leverage.

Use the mountain bunch alignment to your advantage by motioning a receiver out of the stack pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone coverage before the snap.

Hot route the flat route to a slant if you diagnose Cover 3 sink zone drops, since the natural flat throw can get sunk by an underneath defender squatting on the route.

This play pairs well with Mtn HB Swing or Mtn HB Slip Screen in the same set since those plays sell the same bunch look but attack the perimeter horizontally, keeping linebackers honest before you come back to Mtn Z Spot on the following snap.

Best called on second and medium or third and short to medium since the high low read on the Spot combo consistently generates easy completions if the defense sits in zone.
