Breakdown

Slot Outs is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk that isolates the boundary side with a two man combo while the field side runs a mirrored out and vertical stem. To the boundary, the outside receiver runs a hard out to the sideline while the slot receiver runs a quick out and up (a speed out into a wheel look) creating a natural pick and rub against man coverage. The field side TE and slot both run vertical to out breaking crossers that stretch zone defenders horizontally, and the backfield player releases on a shallow out underneath. This is primarily a man beater because of the rub concept on the boundary, with the field side out routes doubling as zone beaters against soft cushion coverage. Primary read progression starts with the boundary out route, then works to the underlying out from the backfield, then to the field side crossers if the play holds up.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the cornerback on the boundary is playing press man since the rub route concept is designed to beat exactly that alignment. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers sitting in underneath zones can jump the backfield out route, so be ready to progress to the field side crossers. Against zone coverage, key the flow of the underneath defenders to the boundary side, since the field side vertical to out breaking routes will find soft spots if the defense overcommits. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the short middle zone are the biggest threat to this concept, since they can undercut both the backfield out and the field side crossers. Cover 3 with a hard sink corner can take away the boundary out route, so be prepared to climb the progression quickly to the field side combo before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and short since the boundary out route gets to the sticks quickly against man coverage.

Check the corner alignment before the snap: if you see press man on the boundary receiver, expect the rub to spring him open, so key that route first.

If the defense shows a two high safety shell, work the field side crossers since the underneath zone defenders will be occupied by the vertical stems.

Pair this play in your call sheet with H Stick or X Spot to keep the defense guessing between quick out breaking routes and shallow crossers out of the same formation.

Use the hot route to convert the backfield player into a check release if you are facing a heavy blitz look, giving your quarterback an emergency outlet on the shallow out.
