PA Y Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk that sells the run fake before the QB works a deep crossing route from the TE (the red route) sweeping all the way across the field. The outside receiver to the crosser's side runs a corner/flag route clearing the top of the defense, while the backside receiver stems upfield on a vertical before breaking, and the near-side slot runs a quick out to hold the underneath defender. The primary read progression starts with the Y crosser working from the play-action fake, then works to the corner route if the crosser is taken away by a linebacker sinking underneath, with the vertical route serving as a big-play alert against overplayed coverage.
Watch for linebackers staying disciplined in their run fits instead of biting on the play-action fake, since that is the primary counter to this play. Zone coverage with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field can jump the Y crosser route, so check for a defender hovering in the shallow middle before releasing the ball late. Cover 3 with a sinking flat defender can undercut the crosser as it crosses the field, so time the throw before the route reaches that zone. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single-high safety, since that often means the corner route or vertical route will have a one-on-one matchup against a rotated corner. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket before the Y crosser fully develops, so account for a quick checkdown or hot route if pressure comes free.
Use PA Y Cross on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have established the run game, since the play fake needs defenders biting downhill to be effective.
Read the middle linebacker at the snap: if he bites on the run fake, the Y crosser will have a clean throwing lane across the field.
Against man coverage, the Y crosser naturally creates separation crossing the field, making it a strong man beater when paired with the vertical route drawing the deep defender away.
Pair this play with HB Mid Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run action, then dial up PA Y Cross to capitalize on aggressive run fits.
If the defense shows a two-high shell pre-snap, expect the crosser to be the primary target since the safeties will be occupied by the corner and vertical routes stretching the field.
