Breakdown

PA Y Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk that sells a run fake before the QB works a deep crossing route from the backside TE (Y) all the way across the field. The two outside receivers to the left run a vertical clear-out and a quick out to occupy the corner and flood that side, while the right side receiver runs a corner route to hold the safety, and the backfield stays in to protect on the play fake. The primary read progression starts with the Y crosser working from right to left, then peeks the corner route if the crosser is taken away by underneath zone defenders, using the deep out as a checkdown against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker run fits pre snap, if they are stacked tight to the box the play action window opens up big for the Y crosser. Man coverage on the TE is a green light, the crosser should create natural separation working across traffic against most linebackers and slower safeties. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined hook defenders can sit on the crosser, so key the flat defender and be ready to climb to the corner route instead. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone are the biggest threat to this concept, if you see a defender spying that lane bail to the outside routes. Cover 2 with aggressive underneath linebackers who don't respect the run fake can undercut the crosser quickly, so pump fake the play action hard to freeze them before releasing the throw.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like second and medium to sell the run fake convincingly against aggressive front sevens.

Check the flow of linebackers pre snap, if they bite hard on the run action the Y crosser will have a wide open lane working across the middle of the field.

Use the corner route on the right as your answer against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the crosser gets sat down by a hook defender.

Pair this with Inside Zone or HB Base from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between run and play action off identical pre-snap looks.

Hot route the flat out route on the left into a deeper option if you see Cover 2 flat defenders squatting underneath, giving you a manufactured explosive play against soft zone.
