Breakdown

Redzone HB Scissors lines up in a tight bunch look to the left with the HB and TE crossing routes at the stem, one breaking outside to the corner and the other cutting hard underneath to the flat, creating a natural scissors crossing pattern designed to confuse man defenders and rub off coverage. To the right, two receivers run a stacked out and pivot combo, sitting down in the shallow zone as a checkdown against soft coverage. The primary read starts with the scissors side: look for the corner breaking defender to bite on the flat route, then throw the corner route behind him, and if the crossing traffic creates a natural rub against man coverage, work back to the shallow flat as your check.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sits on the shallow crosser the corner route behind him will be wide open against Cover 2. Check the corner alignment on the scissors side pre-snap, tight man coverage with no safety help is where the scissors rub becomes most dangerous. Key the underneath linebackers, if they widen with the flat route it opens throwing lanes for the crossing routes to settle in the middle void. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone since he can jump the underneath crosser and bait a turnover if the quarterback throws too early. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes with no deep help, since the scissors concept needs time to develop and a blitzing defense can disrupt the timing before routes clear.

Usage Tips

Use this play inside the 20 when you need a quick answer against man coverage since the scissors concept naturally picks off defenders in the crossing traffic.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 2 or Cover 4 by checking safety depth, both shells are directly targeted by the corner route sneaking behind the flat defender.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the backside out route into a slant to give yourself an easy answer away from the scissors concept.

Pair this play with H Stick or Quick Slants in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the delayed scissors break.

On third and short or in the redzone, trust the low corner route first since it is the highest leverage throw against both zone and man coverage in tight spaces.
