Breakdown

Spot Y Cross out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk lines up 11 personnel with two receivers stacked to the play side, the Y off the line and a receiver split wide left. At the snap the outside receiver runs a corner route to clear the flat, the Y works underneath on a settle route to the sideline for the spot concept, and the TE from the strong side runs a deep crossing route all the way across the field. The backside X on the far left runs a vertical clear-out route while the RB (red route) kicks out to the flat for a checkdown or safety valve. This is a Cover 3 beater built around the spot concept combined with a deep crosser, and the primary read progresses from the flat route to the settling spot route underneath, then to the Y crossing route working from the strong side to the weak side against zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the flat defender in Cover 3, if he widens to the corner route the settle route from the Y sits wide open underneath. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals zone and opens the window for the deep crossing route, a deep drop with man mirroring signals the crosser will be covered longer. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the intermediate crossing lane, this lurk technique is the biggest threat to the Y crosser and forces you to check down to the settle route instead. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge open up the checkdown to the RB flaring out of the backfield, since the protection will be outnumbered and the quick throw is the answer. Cover 2 with two deep safeties can squeeze the crossing route in the middle of the field, so target the settle route or the flat route on that shell rather than forcing the ball to the Y.

Usage Tips

Use this against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells since the spot concept underneath and the deep crosser stretch the zone horizontally and vertically at the same time.

Pre snap, identify if the corner over the flat receiver is playing off or press, since press coverage disrupts the timing of the corner clear out route and opens the settle route faster.

If the defense shows single high safety with the corner sitting deep, key on the Y crosser sitting down in the void behind the underneath linebackers for an easy completion.

Hot route the backside vertical route into a slant or drag if you see man coverage across the board, since the clear out route alone does not create enough separation versus tight man technique.

Pair this play with Slot Cross or Double Cross in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the deep crossing route tendency, then come back to Spot Y Cross once they start jumping the shallow crossers.

Use on third and medium to third and long since the spot concept underneath combined with the crosser gives you a high floor checkdown and a home run shot if the crosser gets loose against zone.
