HB Base out of Spread Y-Flex Wk is a straightforward inside dive run designed to attack the A-gap with the offensive line blocking down and creating a natural crease behind the center and guard. The diagram shows all four wide receivers running vertical releases up the numbers to occupy corners and safeties, clearing space underneath and forcing the second level to honor the pass threat before crashing down on the run fit. The HB takes the handoff and reads the interior double team, pressing the point of attack and cutting off the first color he sees on the frontside A or B gap.
Defensive Reads
Stack the box with a run-fitting linebacker and blitz the A-gap to disrupt the mesh point before the back can hit the crease. Play a two-high shell with safeties reading run first since the four vertical releases will not scare off-ball defenders who are disciplined in their run fits. Watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing downhill immediately at the snap; if they diagnose the dive quickly, this play has no answer without a cutback lane. Cover 1 with a spy or extra hat in the box shuts this down completely because it eliminates the numbers advantage the vertical releases are supposed to create. If the defense shows Cover 3 with the corners bailing deep at the snap, that confirms zone drops are prioritizing the verticals, which is exactly when the interior run lane opens up for the HB.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Spread Y-Flex Wk when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders since the four vertical releases occupy the secondary and prevent easy run support rotation.
Use pre-snap motion or a simple check to confirm the linebacker depth: if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow expecting run, consider audibling to a play-action shot play in this set like PA Dagger or PA Y Cross instead.
This works best on early downs (1st and 2nd and medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy dropback game.
Pair HB Base with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble in the same personnel grouping so the defense cannot key run fits without conceding the perimeter throw.
Against aggressive gap-shooting fronts, user the fullback or lead blocker (if assigned) to seal the first free hitter and let the HB find the cutback lane rather than forcing it between the tackles.
