Mtn Y Stick lines up in Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk with a pre-snap motion man crossing the formation into a shallow drag/flat route on the left. The two X receivers on the left run the classic stick combo, one sitting down on a hitch and the other working an out breaking pattern to the corner, while the inline TE on the right runs a quick out to the flat and the backside X on the far right pushes a vertical seam/go route up the numbers. This is a man beater built around the stick concept: the vertical clears out deep coverage while the stick and flat routes create a natural triangle read against man leverage, with the motion drag as a built-in checkdown against blitz or heavy man pressure. Primary progression is stick (settle route) to flat (out route) to the checkdown drag, with the vertical as a shot play if a corner gets caught in trail technique.
Pre-snap, key the safety alignment: two high safeties suggest zone drops underneath that can clog the stick and flat routes, while a single high safety often means man coverage that this concept is designed to shred. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the stick route or widens late to the out route, that tells you whether to work inside or outside on your first read. Identify any user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone near the motion man's drag route, since a spy or rat defender there can jump the checkdown and bait a bad throw. Look for corner blitzes or nano blitzes off the edge, since this formation's Y-Flex TE alignment can leave the edge exposed and the flat route becomes an emergency outlet against pressure. Cover 3 with a hard sink from the middle linebacker takes away the stick sit route, so if you see that shell rotate late, work the vertical or the drag instead of forcing the stick throw.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the stick concept becomes very high percentage.
Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig against zone shells that show two deep safeties, since the pure vertical loses value versus soft zone coverage.
This play shines on third and short to third and medium because the stick settle route and flat combo give you an easy answer against both Cover 3 sink and man match coverage.
Pair this with Mtn Bench or Mtn Bench Curls in your play-calling sequence, since both attack similar horizontal stretch zones and keep linebackers guessing on flat responsibilities.
Against aggressive blitz teams, target the motion drag immediately as your blitz-beater since it clears the box fast and gives your quarterback a quick release valve.
