Breakdown

Smash HB Angle is a man beater built around a high low combo on one side of the field paired with a running back angle route out of the backfield. The corner route and hitch on the smash side stretch the cornerback and flat defender vertically while the angle route from the HB attacks linebackers and nickel defenders who bite on run action or struggle to mirror the out and up movement in space. Primary progression starts with the smash concept read (hitch to corner) against man coverage, then works to the HB angle route as the checkdown or man beater against blitzing linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth and alignment. Two high shells signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which invites the corner route to work against a hard flat defender. Watch the slot cornerback or nickel defender at the snap. If he sinks with the corner route in man coverage, the HB angle route becomes the easy answer underneath. Identify linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers playing shallow zone drops or blitzing off the edge get exposed by the HB angle route's out and up burst. Post snap, look for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the throwing lane to the corner route. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a deep middle defender, respect the sink and check down to the angle route instead. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses like Cover 6 or Cover 2 Man where underneath defenders squeeze passing lanes and the angle route runs into traffic instead of open grass.

Usage Tips

Motion the HB or check the flat defender pre snap to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since this play is designed to punish man coverage on both the smash side and the angle route.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, hot route the angle route to a flat or option route so the HB isn't running into a zone defender sitting underneath.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the angle route creates easy separation against linebackers in man coverage for a quick, safe completion.

Pair this play with H Stick or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to bait defenders into sitting on short routes, then hit the corner route for an explosive gain once the defense overplays the underneath stuff.

Against aggressive blitz teams, lean on the angle route as your immediate answer since it gets the HB into space fast and protects against nano blitzes off the edge.
