The primary read progression starts with the HB swing as an immediate outlet against blitz looks, then climbs to the underneath crossers if the defense sits on the swing.

Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the linebackers after the Mtn motion shift, if they overcommit to the shift side the swing lane opens instantly. Identify Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 quarters shells pre-snap, since these leave the flat defender in conflict between the swing and any underneath crosser. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the HB or sitting in the shallow flat, which signals the defense is keying the swing and you should progress to the secondary route. Against man coverage with press corners, expect this play to lose efficiency since there is no natural pick or rub to free the swing route from a trailing linebacker. Check blitz indicators like a linebacker creeping toward the line pre-snap, since a well-timed blitz can beat the swing before the HB gets to the edge, forcing a quick check down decision.

Usage Tips

Use the Mtn motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the shift, which opens up extra grass for the HB swing to the open side.

Call this on early downs or third and short when defenses are more likely to show Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells that leave the flat exposed.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage rotate toward the Mtn motion, since the swing loses value against tight man leverage.
