Breakdown

Orbit Y Stick lines up in Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk with 11 personnel and uses orbit motion from the backfield to the flat before the snap. Off the diagram, the outside receiver runs a corner/flag route, the slot receiver runs the stick concept sitting down at the sticks, the TE releases vertically up the seam, and the motion man plus the running back work a swing/flat combo underneath along the sideline. This is a classic Stick concept zone beater that also creates natural high-low man beater conflict against slot corners and flat defenders, with the primary read progression going stick (slot sit route) to flat (motion man) to seam (TE) to corner (outside WR) as the deep clear-out.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback leverage on the outside receiver since a hard corner shading outside leverage signals Cover 3 or man press, opening up the stick route inside. Watch how the defense reacts to the orbit motion: man coverage will trigger a defender to travel with the motion man, while zone coverage will have defenders stay in their landmarks. Post-snap, key the flat defender and outside linebacker since they determine whether the stick route or the flat route to the motion man is open first. This concept is vulnerable to a hard-squatting flat defender in Cover 2 who can sit on both the stick and flat routes, so be ready to climb the progression to the TE seam or corner route. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone, since they can jump the stick route if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use the orbit motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone: if a defender runs with the motion man across the formation, you are facing man coverage and can attack the stick or corner route immediately.

Against zone shells, work the stick route first since it settles into the soft spot between underneath zones and is the quickest answer versus Cover 2 and Cover 3.

This play shines on third and short to medium since the stick route sits down right at the sticks for an easy conversion read.

Hot route the TE into a deeper seam or use him as an extra blocker if you diagnose a heavy blitz look before the snap.

Pair this with Orbit Y Sail or Orbit Stick N Nod in your play-calling sequence since the same orbit motion disguises different route concepts and keeps defenders guessing on run fits versus pass drops.
