Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, since man beater crossing concepts like this one are most effective against single high man coverage looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3 man match. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender at the snap, if they open their hips and run with the crossers in man coverage you know it is man and the picks and rubs will create separation. Key the middle linebacker or hook zone defender post snap, if he sits and reads the quarterback he can undercut both the dig route and the shallow crosser, which is the biggest threat to this concept in zone coverage. Look for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, aggressive human defenders will often jump the underneath routes early which opens up the deeper dig and corner routes behind them. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers, since the crossing routes run directly into sitting zone defenders and lack the vertical stretch needed to move deep zone coverage out of position.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium to third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage and give the crossers room to work through traffic.

Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow in a hook zone he can jump the underneath crossers so be ready to climb the ladder to the dig or corner instead.

Hot route the running back into a check release if you are facing a heavy blitz look, since he crosses through traffic and is vulnerable to free rushers if he stays in as a route runner against six or more pass rushers.

Pair this call with Slot Cross or H Shallow Cross earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect underneath crossing routes, then hit them with the deeper dig and corner combo here once they start jumping the shallow stuff.

Against zone heavy defenses, work your primary read to the corner route sitting behind the flat defender and in front of the deep half safety, since the crossing traffic underneath naturally occupies the shorter zone defenders.
