H Mtn Middle Divide

Breakdown

H Mtn Middle Divide comes out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk with 11 personnel and a pre-snap motion tag that sends the H back across the formation before the snap. Off the diagram, the outside receivers stay uninvolved on this side while the middle of the field features a divide concept: one route breaks outside and up the seam on the sideline stem while the other route angles inward and settles as a deep crossing dig over the middle, with the running back releasing vertically into the flat as a checkdown option. This is a man beater at its core, using the divide action to stress a single defender with two options breaking opposite directions from a similar stem, and the primary read progresses from the deep seam breaking to the sideline down to the crossing dig, checking down to the back underneath if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker at the snap, if he bites on the running back's vertical release the crossing dig will come open behind him. Key the safety over the top on the seam route side, if he stays flat-footed reading the run fake or motion, the seam wins for an explosive gain. Identify man coverage by checking if a defender shadows the H motion across the formation, this confirms one-on-one matchups you can exploit with the divide breaks. Watch for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the throwing lane between the seam and dig routes, a disciplined zone lurk defender can undercut both routes if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Look for blitz packages that leave the middle of the field uncovered, if the defense sends extra rushers without replacing the vacated zone, the crossing dig is a quick answer against pressure.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to follow the H back, this reveals man coverage immediately and tells you the divide concept will win.

Against single-high safety looks, trust the seam route to win over the top since the divide stresses the deep defender's leverage before he can get depth.

If the defense shows two-high shell, work the crossing dig underneath since zone defenders will sink and open a throwing lane in the middle of the field.

Pair this play with Mtn Bench Curls or Mtn Whip Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the underneath crossers, then hit the seam breaker for a big play once linebackers start jumping short routes.

Best called on second or third and medium distances where the defense is more likely to show zone shells, letting the divide concept isolate a linebacker or safety with conflicting run responsibilities.
