H Mtn Y Stick is a quick-game man beater out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk that pairs a mountain (Mtn) motion shift with the classic Stick concept to the field. The H back motions across the formation pre-snap to adjust leverage and help identify man versus zone, while the Y (TE) runs the stick route as the primary read against the flat defender or curl/hook player. Progression starts with the Y stick option route, works to the flat route for a quick outlet against blitz or off coverage, and finishes with the backside slot for a hi-low read if the underneath defenders sit on the stick.
Watch the linebacker or nickel defender assigned to shadow the Mtn motion, if he follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and the stick option should break away from that defender. Identify the flat zone defender post snap, if he sinks under the stick route on a curl to flat drop it signals zone coverage and the QB should hit the stick sitting behind him instead of throwing to the flat. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and deep third corners tends to clog the underneath stick window, so look for the backside slot route as the zone beater outlet in that shell. Blitz packages that bring the nickel or overhang defender off the edge leave the flat wide open immediately off the snap, making this a strong answer against aggressive nano blitz pressure. Man coverage with a deep half safety over the top invites a natural rub or pick between the Y stick and the H motion path, so watch for defenders getting tangled in traffic underneath.
Use the Mtn motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into showing man coverage, since a defender following the H across the formation confirms man and opens up the stick option route to sit or break outside.
Hot route the flat route to a quick out or speed out if you see a corner sitting hard on that flat zone, it removes the leverage defender before he can jump the stick.
This play shines on third and short to third and medium since the stick option gives the QB a built in answer versus both zone and man without needing a deep shot.
Pair this with Mtn Spot Y Seam or Mtn Bench Curls in the same set to keep defenders guessing on the mountain motion, forcing them to declare coverage rotation before the snap.
Against zone heavy defenses, key the flat defender first since the stick route will settle right behind him if he widens with the motion man.
