Breakdown

PA Dagger shows a play-action shot off run action with the classic dagger concept stacked on the left side. The inside receiver runs a vertical seam straight up the field while the outside receiver on that side runs a deep dig that sits behind the underneath zone, creating a natural high low read on one side of the field. On the right, the TE runs a deep in from the flat area and the outside receiver runs a corner route, giving you a full field flood with four distinct route depths. This is primarily a zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by clearing out the vertical seam with the streak and settling the dig into the vacated middle window, with the primary read progression going seam to dig first, then working to the corner route or the in route on the backside if the safety cheats over.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth immediately after the snap since a shallow drop into the intermediate zone signals he is sitting on the dig route and you should look to the seam or corner instead. Key the deep safeties before the snap, if they show two high and stay two high after the play fake, the dig sitting behind the underneath zone and in front of the safeties is your best throw. Against Cover 3, the flow of the field safety will tell you whether to trust the seam route or come off it quickly to the dig sitting in the hole vacated by the rotating corner. User controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field are the biggest threat to this concept, so if you see a user spying the dig or seam lane, look to the corner route or the in route on the opposite side. Man coverage without a robber or deep help is a bad matchup for the defense here, but disciplined zone drops from linebackers who stay square to the dig can shut down the primary read and force you to the secondary routes.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into biting on the run fake before the seam and dig develop behind them.

Identify two high safety shells before the snap since Cover 2 and Cover 3 are the primary weak points this concept exploits, especially if the corner playing the seam side is aligned in soft coverage.

If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the dig into a deeper crossing route or check the seam runner to a slant to avoid the route colliding with underneath defenders.

This play works best on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells and respect the play-action look off standard down and distance run tendencies.

Pair this call with HB Mid Draw or RPO Zone Peek earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then hit PA Dagger once the defense starts flowing hard to stop the ground game.
