PA Dagger is a play-action shot play out of Spread Y-Flex Wk in Shotgun that hits off the classic dagger concept on the left side. The inside receiver runs a deep vertical seam clearing out the top of the defense while the slot receiver sits down underneath on a dig that settles into the void left behind. On the right side the TE runs a corner route while the RB releases into a flat/out route underneath, giving you a natural two-level stretch on both sides of the field. This is a play-action zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, and the primary read progression starts with the deep seam clearing the safety, then works down to the dig sitting in the intermediate window if the safety stays deep.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties or a single high safety to identify Cover 2 versus Cover 3 shells, since Dagger is designed to exploit both with the seam and dig combo. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or the deep safety rotation, if the safety bites on the play action fake, the seam route will be wide open behind him. Watch for a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, since that is the exact window the dig route is designed to settle into and an aggressive user rat can jump it. If the defense shows man coverage with press corners, expect the seam to get contested early, so the dig becomes the higher percentage answer against man beaters. Look for a delayed blitz off the edge or from a linebacker, since play action rollouts and shot plays like Dagger are vulnerable to sim pressure and nano blitzes that collapse the pocket before the deep routes develop.
Use this on early downs or 2nd and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells rather than blitz. Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high, since Dagger is built to punish that look by clearing one deep safety with the seam and settling the dig into the middle void. If the corner is playing tight man on the seam route, hot route it to a slant or use the dig as your first read since man coverage disrupts the natural sit-down window. Sequence this play with Four Verticals or PA Y Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the seam and bites on play action, then come back to Dagger to hit the dig against a defense that is jumping the shallow crossers. Against Cover 3, key the flat defender and RB route to hold the underneath zone defender before working the dig behind him.
