Wing Flex Close is the compressed, run-first branch of the Singleback tree. Where Singleback Wide or Doubles stretches the field with split receivers, Wing Flex Close tightens everything down: 12 personnel with one tight end attached to the line, the second tight end set as a wing off the edge, and a flexed receiver working just outside the numbers. That wing alignment is the whole point. It gives you an extra edge blocker for the zone and stretch game while still releasing a legitimate route runner into the flat or up the seam, so the defense cannot cleanly declare run or pass off the formation alone.
The play list leans heavily on the inside zone and stretch family (Inside Zone Split, HB Zone Wk, Mtn HB Stretch, HB Stretch, HB Toss Weak, HB Dive) with the wing sealing the backside or leading on the toss. Off that same look you get the play action package that competitive players actually want: PA Cross Switch, Mtn PA Boot Cross Y-Corner, Mtn PA Boot Corner, PA Cross Country, and PA Shot Post. Because the formation is condensed, defenders in zone have to squeeze inside, which means boot concepts and corner routes attack grass that simply is not there out of spread sets.
The Gadget tag comes from the jet motion package: PA Jet Sweep, Jet Sweep, and Zone Fake Jet. Motioning the flexed receiver across the formation forces the defense to reveal man or zone before the snap, and it drags a defender out of the run fit at the same time. On the pure pass side, Four Verticals out of a condensed set creates natural high low leverage against Cover 3 because two seam runners occupy the middle third, while Smash, Stick, Drive Y Corner, Mtn Corner Y-Choice, and Mtn Slot Option give you option and triangle reads that isolate your best tight end on a linebacker or nickel with plenty of room to the outside.
Motion the flexed receiver across the formation on any pass concept first to confirm man or zone, then decide between the boot corner series and the option routes based on what the defender does.
Use this set on first and second down between the 25s to establish Inside Zone Split and HB Stretch, then punish the run commit with Mtn PA Boot Cross Y-Corner off the identical backfield action.
Against single high looks, go to Four Verticals or PA Shot Post and hot route the running back to a checkdown so you always have an outlet against six man pressure.
Versus base personnel, check to Mtn Slot Option or Mtn Corner Y-Choice and read the leverage on your wing tight end, because a linebacker in space is the matchup you are hunting.
In short yardage and goal line, HB Dive and Inside Zone Split behind the extra edge blocker are efficient, and Stick with a hot routed flat gives you a quick answer against man press.
