Breakdown

PA Cross Country runs a play-action fake out of Singleback Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) that opens with a run fake to hold the linebackers before the QB works a deep crossing route. The red route is the primary crosser, breaking hard from the opposite side and climbing across the field to the far sideline for a deep shot. Underneath, the yellow routes show a vertical seam breaking outside toward the sideline, a shallow drag heading the opposite direction, and a short flat route to the play-action side, giving the quarterback a full-field stretch off the fake. This is a play-action man beater built to exploit linebackers biting on the run and to hit the deep crosser once it clears the second level, with the shallow drag and flat as checkdown options if the crosser is covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single-high or two-high safety look, since single-high shells with a robber underneath can jump the deep crosser if the user plays disciplined. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they sit at depth instead of stepping up on the run fake, the crosser will be sitting in a crowded window and should not be forced. Key the flow of any user-controlled linebacker or safety flowing across the field, since a lurking defender reading the quarterback's eyes can undercut the crosser before it reaches the sideline. This play struggles against zone coverage that keeps linebackers at depth and spins a safety over the top of the crossing route, so look to check down to the flat or drag if that shell is shown. Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the shell this beats best, especially if the defense sends a blitz that pulls coverage away from the crosser's path.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball at the mesh point as long as possible, since linebacker eyes on the backfield are what spring the deep crosser open. Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more willing to bite on run action. Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two deep safeties sitting on top, the crosser will need extra time to develop, so consider hot routing the flat route into a quick out to speed up the underneath option. Pair this call with Inside Zone Split or Mtn Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake and commits linebackers downhill. Against man coverage, key the crosser's route stem and throw with anticipation right as it clears the middle linebacker's zone, since defenders trailing from the opposite side will be a step behind.
