Breakdown
Four Verticals out of Singleback Wing Flex Close 12 personnel sends four receivers vertically up the field while the HB releases into a check-down flat route out of the backfield. Both outside receivers stem to the numbers on vertical stems, the two inline TEs push seams up the middle of the field, and the HB works a shallow out route underneath as the release valve if the verts are covered. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to stress deep zone defenders with four vertical stems, and the primary read progression starts with the seam routes against Cover 2 middle-of-field defenders before working outside to the numbers routes and finally checking down to the HB flat route.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, read the safety depth and width, if both safeties sit deep and wide at the numbers that signals Cover 2 and the seams will be your best shot. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sinks deep into the seam that is a sign of Cover 2 or Cover 3 with a robber underneath, which should push your eyes to the HB flat route or the number routes. User-controlled defenders sitting in a deep middle lurk will jump the seam routes, so double move or hesitate the throw to bait that user before resetting to the opposite seam. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play gets shut down fastest if the defense disguises Cover 0 or Cover 1 with a spy, since there is no natural rub or pick to separate receivers from tight man coverage. Nano blitzes off the edge with a Cover 3 shell behind it can force a quick decision, so key the outside pass rush width to decide between the HB checkdown and a quick number route throw.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two-high or rotating to single-high because that dictates which seam or number route will have the clearest window.
Against Cover 2, target the seam routes right as the safeties widen to the numbers, since the void in the middle of the field opens up fast against a two deep shell.
Against Cover 3, work the number routes to the boundary since the flat defender cannot cover that much vertical ground, and the deep third defender has to choose between the seam and the number route.
Use the HB flat route as your built-in checkdown versus zone blitzes or when the pass rush forces a quick decision, it keeps this play viable on third and medium as well as third and long.
Pair this play with Stick or PA Cross Switch (M20) from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays, since the formation and personnel look identical pre-snap.
