HB Duo out of Singleback Wing Flex Close is a gap scheme run play designed to double team the frontside defensive lineman at the point of attack before climbing to the second level. The offensive line covers down and works vertical push to seal linebackers, with the fullback and TE personnel from the 12 grouping adding extra beef on the edges to control the box. This is a run play, not a route concept, so the primary read is the running back reading the double team block on the frontside double, pressing the hole, and cutting off the block of the puller or climbing lineman based on linebacker flow.
Read the frontside defensive tackle alignment pre-snap since Duo wants a base front rather than an overloaded bear or 46 look that stacks extra bodies inside Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and downhill they can beat the double team block before it climbs and blow up the play in the backfield User controlled defenders flying downhill immediately after the snap are the biggest threat, spy or blitz the interior gap to shut this down before the back can press the hole Check safety rotation, if both safeties are deep in a two high shell the box is lighter and Duo has room to work, but a single high shell often means an extra run defender is cheating up Zone dropping linebackers who stay patient and read the mesh point can string the play out to the sideline, so look for aggressive fits versus passive ones to know if the cutback lane will open
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders since Duo needs numbers to win up front against stacked fronts
Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your play-action shots
Motion the TE or use pre-snap shifts to identify if the defense is playing a run blitz or base front, and check to a different play if you see an extra defender crashing the frontside gap
Pair this with PA Boot Drive Corner or PA Boot Screen from the same set so the play-action look off Duo action keeps second level defenders frozen on run fits
Manually control the fullback or lead blocker if the CPU AI misses an assignment against odd fronts to secure the double team longer
