PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) sells the jet sweep fake before releasing three vertical stem routes. The gold route runs a deep post-corner from the inline TE, the red route breaks from a quick out into a deep dig across the middle, and the blue receiver runs an underneath drag from the backfield motion action all the way across the formation. This is a play-action shot play built to punish run-heavy defenses and aggressive linebacker flow, with the primary read starting on the deep gold post-corner against single-high safety looks before working down to the red dig and then the blue drag as the checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the jet sweep fake it opens up the red dig route working across the vacated middle of the field. Man coverage defenses that send a defender to chase the jet motion in the backfield are vulnerable to the gold post-corner beating a lone safety over the top. Cover 3 and single-high shells are exposed on the gold vertical route since the deep safety cannot cover both the post-corner and any other vertical threat. Zone defenses with linebackers sinking into intermediate drops can undercut the red dig, so user your MLB or a nickel defender to sit in that window and jump the throw. Two-high safety looks with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the run fake will force the quarterback to check down to the blue drag, so rally fast with linebackers to limit yards after catch.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to follow the jet motion man, since that confirms man coverage or a run blitz look.
Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are keyed up to stop the run based on formation and personnel tendencies.
Hot route the blue drag into a deeper crossing route if you see two-high safety shells sitting soft, since the drag alone will not threaten deep zone coverage.
Pair this with HB Toss Weak or HB Zone Wk from the same set earlier in a series to condition the defense into flowing hard on jet and toss action, then hit this shot play off that same look.
Snap the ball quickly on obvious run downs to catch linebackers cheating downhill before they can read pass and drop into their zone landmarks.
