Mtn PA Boot Drive Corner is a play-action boot concept out of Singleback Wing Flex Close that sells the Mtn (mountain motion) run fake before the QB rolls out on the boot path. The route combo pairs a corner route to attack the deep outside third with an underneath drive/crosser working the intermediate middle, giving you a high low stretch on any defender who bites on the play fake or sits on the flat. This is primarily a man beater because the corner route creates natural separation off the boot roll and the drive route picks on trailing linebackers and safeties, but it also punishes zone defenses that overcommit to the run fake since the boot action pulls flow defenders and linebackers out of position, opening the drive route behind them. Primary read progression starts with the corner route on any single high or man alignment, then works down to the drive route underneath if the corner is capped or the safety rotates over the top.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high defenses are more vulnerable since the safety has run fake responsibility before covering the corner route Watch cornerback alignment on the boot side, press man leaves the corner route vulnerable to a double move stem while soft coverage invites an easy pitch and catch on the drive route Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they crash hard on the run fake the drive route will be wide open behind them in the vacated intermediate zone Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat or lurking underneath, this is the biggest threat to the drive route and usually means the corner route is your primary answer This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells where the deep defenders stay home on the play fake and squeeze the corner route, and it gets shut down by contain blitzes or nano blitzes that collapse the boot pocket before the QB can climb through his reads
Run this on early downs, first and second and long, when you have already established the Mtn run action from this set so linebackers respect the fake and bite on run flow
Check safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety shaded toward the boot side, throw off the corner route timing since the safety has to respect the run fake before turning to cover deep
Use the drive route as your answer against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells where the corner gets squeezed by a deep third defender rolling over
Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag or spot if you are getting spy pressure from off ball linebackers, this gives the QB a checkdown outlet on the move
Sequence this play after HB Dive, Mtn Inside Zone Split, or Mtn HB Stretch so the defense keys run action from the same personnel and formation, making the boot fake more believable
Avoid calling this on third and long or in situations where the defense is clearly playing pass first since the run fake loses its effectiveness and linebackers will sit on the drive route
