Breakdown

Drive Y Corner out of Singleback Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) shows a five man protection look with a route combo built to attack Cover 4 and other zone shells. The backside runs a drive concept underneath, with the flat route breaking outside and the drive route working across the formation horizontally under the linebackers. On the playside, the Y (in) runs a corner route that stems vertically before breaking toward the sideline, while the outside receiver clears vertically on a go/streak to hold the corner and safety deep. The primary read progression starts with the Y corner route against Cover 4 or split safety looks, then works down to the underneath drive and flat combo if the corner route is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties. Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells are the primary coverages this corner route is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat player on the playside. If that defender widens with the flat route, the window for the Y corner route opens up behind him. Key the safety over the top of the corner route. If he sits flat footed or bites on play action, the corner route will be wide open in the void. Post-snap, look for user controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position over the drive concept, since that is the quickest answer if the corner route is taken away. This play struggles against Cover 3 or single high safety shells with aggressive corner reroutes, since the corner route runs into the deep third defender rather than a soft zone window.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect a two high shell like Cover 4 or Cover 2 since the corner route is designed to sit in the honey hole between the flat defender and the deep safety.

Pre-snap, check the corner and safety alignment on the playside. If the corner is pressed and the safety is rotated over the top, the corner route window shrinks so be ready to work the drive concept underneath instead.

Hot route the drive route into a quicker option against a zone blitz look since it crosses the field and gives the quarterback a hot answer versus overload pressure.

Pair this play with Mtn PA Boot Corner or PA Jet Sweep from the same set to sell run action first, then hit this dropback corner concept once the defense starts cheating up on play action.

Sequence this with Four Verticals earlier in a series so that Cover 4 defenders get conditioned to sink deep, opening up the intermediate corner route window on this call.
