Breakdown

Mtn PA Boot Corner is a play-action rollout concept out of Singleback Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) that boots the quarterback away from the play side flow to attack the flat and corner zones. The diagram shows a deep corner route from the boundary receiver breaking outside near the sideline, a shallow drag/crosser working all the way across the formation underneath, and a flat route bracketing the boot side to hold the flat defender. With the offensive line and running back sliding to sell the run action, the primary read progression starts with the corner route on the boot side, then works down to the drag if the corner is capped, with the flat route as the checkdown against aggressive underneath pressure.

Defensive Reads

Look for linebackers stepping up hard on the run fake pre-snap, which confirms they are biting on the play-action and opening throwing lanes underneath. Identify single-high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 as prime targets since the corner route can win over the top of a rotating corner. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the quarterback on the boot side, which signals contain pressure designed to stop the rollout. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, key the flat defender: if he sinks with the corner route, the drag route sitting down in the void becomes the easy answer. Beware of edge blitzes or a fast contain rusher crashing the boot side, since this can collapse the pocket before the corner route develops.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (first or second and medium) when defenses expect run to keep linebackers honest and sell the play-action fake.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two-high shells rotating late, the corner route has a soft spot to sit down in against Cover 2 or Cover 4.

Use the drag route as your primary answer against man coverage since it clears width and creates natural separation off the boot action.

Pair this with Mtn Inside Zone Split or Mtn HB Stretch Wk earlier in a drive so the play-action fake carries more weight and freezes second-level defenders.

If the pass rush is winning off the edge on the boot side, get rid of the ball to the flat route quickly instead of forcing the corner throw.
