Breakdown

Mtn PA Boot Cross Y-Corner is a play-action rollout concept out of Singleback Wing Flex Close that pulls the quarterback outside the pocket while the offensive line sells run action up front. The diagram shows the Y-corner route pushing vertically upfield and breaking hard to the corner as the deep read, a crossing route working underneath from the opposite side, an intermediate out route sitting at the sticks, and a check-release flat route from the backfield after chip protection. This is a play-action man beater at its core, using the corner and crosser combo to stress hard-flowing linebackers and off-man corners, with the primary read progression going Y-corner first on the rollout, then working back down to the crosser and flat as the boot action develops.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker at the snap, if he flows hard toward the run fake the crosser and flat will be wide open underneath. Watch the corner over the Y-corner route, if he is playing off man or bailing into a deep zone the corner route has a clear window on the rollout. Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap, since two high shells with a hard flowing safety can rob the corner route and force a check down to the crosser. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this lurk threat is the biggest danger to the underneath progression. Contain defenders who stay disciplined on the edge instead of chasing run flow will limit the rollout throwing lanes and force an early checkdown to the flat.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or second and medium to keep the play-action threat believable off inside zone looks from the same personnel group. Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Single high shells with the corner playing the boundary hard are prime targets for the Y-corner route since the rollout naturally moves the quarterback into open grass. Hot route the crosser into a deeper option if you see zone drops sitting underneath, since the crossing route is the best answer against man coverage but can get clogged versus zone drop linebackers. Sequence this play after Mtn Inside Zone Split or HB Zone Wk to condition the defense to bite on the run fake, then dial up the boot to punish overaggressive linebacker flow. Against blitz-heavy defenses, use the flat route as a quick outlet since the rollout naturally escapes interior pressure, but watch for edge defenders staying home on contain.
