The diagram shows the ball carrier taking a handoff at speed and sweeping wide toward the edge, with the offensive line executing a lateral zone-blocking scheme to seal the perimeter and clear a running lane outside the tackle box. This is a numbers and gap-integrity run, not a man or zone pass beater, and the primary read is the edge: identify whether the playside defensive end or outside linebacker is sealed or unblocked before deciding to stay outside or cut it up inside off the first wall of blockers.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and lean pre-snap, if they immediately flow with the jet motion man they are playing assignment run fits and you can counter with the play-action version instead. Identify the alignment of the playside defensive end and outside linebacker, a wide-nine or heavy edge set forces the ball carrier to bounce further outside where blocking angles get tougher. Look for a safety rotating down into the box pre-snap, that extra run defender can outnumber the edge blocking and blow up the sweep before it develops. Key on the pursuit angle of the backside linebacker, a disciplined defender who stays home instead of overrunning the play can chase down the cutback lane. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers with no extra flow support usually leaves the edge light, giving the sweep a clean angle if the initial edge block is won.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing early and reveal whether the defense is playing assignment-sound run fits or chasing motion with their eyes.
Call this on early downs or short yardage when the defense shows a light box, since the outside numbers advantage is the whole point of the concept.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from this same set so the defense has to respect both the true sweep and the fake, which slows down pursuit and opens up the play-action shots downfield.
If the defense shows overload blitz or crashes hard to the motion side, hot route the playside tight end or wing to a quick chip or cut block to buy the extra half second needed to get outside.
Against aggressive edge defenders who consistently shoot upfield, stick with the base sweep since their over-pursuit creates a bigger cutback lane for the ball carrier.
