Mtn Drive Shake

Breakdown

Mtn Drive Shake is a levels based passing concept out of Singleback Wing Flex Close 12 personnel, built to attack zone coverage with a shake route paired with a classic drive combo underneath. The Y (TE) runs a shake route to settle into soft spots against zone or create separation with a stutter move against man, while the drive concept underneath stacks routes at different depths to confuse linebackers and safeties. Your primary read starts with the shake route working the middle of the field, then progresses to the drive concept underneath if the shake is blanketed, making this an effective zone beater with man beating traits depending on the defender assigned.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, look at linebacker depth and spacing, since stacked or blitz heavy fronts signal man coverage behind them, which favors the shake route's stutter move against a trailing defender. Post-snap, watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shake route's window, since smart user defense will sit a linebacker or safety right in that soft spot to bait a throw. This concept struggles against a disciplined Cover 2 shell where the safeties stay deep and the corners squeeze the underneath drive routes, so be ready to check down or throw it away. Man coverage with no help over the top is where this play wins most consistently, since the drive route occupies underneath defenders and opens a natural rub for the shake route. If you see a nano blitz or overload pressure look pre-snap, get the ball out on the quick drive route immediately rather than waiting on the shake to develop.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap to identify if you are facing a two high shell or single high look, since the shake route thrives against off man and zone drops that leave the middle of the field open.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4, hot route your outside receiver into a vertical to stretch the corner and open up the shake route working underneath.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short situations where the drive concept underneath gives you a reliable checkdown if the shake route is covered.

Pair this call with Mtn PA Boot Drive Corner or Mtn PA Boot Cross Y-Corner earlier in a series to sell run action first, then come back to Mtn Drive Shake once the defense starts crashing down on Mtn HB Stretch and HB Dive looks.

Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out quickly to the drive route since the shake route needs a full beat to develop and can get you hit if protection breaks down.
