Mtn HB Stretch Lt

Breakdown

Mtn HB Stretch Lt is an outside zone run play out of Singleback Wing Flex Close with 12 personnel, designed to get the HB to the left edge with a wall of blockers moving in unison. The offensive line and both tight ends execute lateral zone steps, reaching and sealing defenders to create a running lane along the boundary rather than a downhill cutback. The primary read progression is the playside tight end and tackle double team on the edge defender: the HB presses the line of scrimmage, reads the flow of the defensive end and outside linebacker, and decides to bounce outside, bend into the alley, or cut back based on how the second level defenders flow with the stretch action.

Defensive Reads

Check the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment before the snap, a wide nine technique or an OLB crashing hard playside signals a blitz that can blow up the stretch before it develops Watch the strong safety depth, if he is stacked close to the box he can fill the alley quickly and force an early cutback read Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, the DE crashing inside while the LB loops outside will erase the bounce lane and force the HB to cut back into traffic Man coverage on the tight ends usually means lighter box numbers and a cleaner edge, this play thrives against man fronts with over pursuing linebackers Zone fronts with disciplined edge defenders who stay square and squeeze the stretch can string the run out for a minimal gain, use jump cuts or bounce to the sideline only when the safety is out of position

Usage Tips

Use this play against defenses that show light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before the snap so your numbers advantage on the edge is clear

Motion the wing tight end pre-snap if available to confirm man versus zone coverage without tipping the run direction

User the playside lead blocker to secure the edge defender or force a linebacker off his path if the AI blocking is inconsistent at the point of attack

Pair this with Mtn HB Stretch (strong side) and Mtn HB Stretch Wk in the same set to keep defenses guessing on run direction while using identical zone blocking rules

Call this on early downs, first and second and short to medium, to stay ahead of the sticks and set up Mtn PA Boot Corner or Mtn PA Boot Drive Corner off the same run action later in the drive
