Breakdown

Mtn Corner Y-Choice from Singleback Wing Flex Close is a five man route concept designed to attack both deep and short zones with a clear alpha route. Pre-snap the yellow receiver motions across the formation, and off the snap the cyan route runs a deep drag/crosser stretching one side of the field while the red route breaks into a deep corner from the opposite alignment. The yellow flanker runs a choice route (option) breaking off toward open grass or a shallow crosser depending on coverage, the blue back releases into a flat/wheel route, and the primary read starts with the deep corner route (red) working to the choice route (yellow) as the coverage rotates, checking down to the flat route (blue) versus pressure or when both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify if the defense shifts a defender to trail the motion man, confirming man coverage and opening up the choice route as a hot man beater. Key the free safety depth and rotation after the snap, since a rotation to the corner route side signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 and means the choice route or flat route become the higher percentage throws. Watch for a linebacker or slot corner sinking into the choice route’s landing spot, which indicates a zone drop designed to take away the option route’s window. Beware disguised Cover 2 shells where the cornerback jumps the corner route route, since this play is vulnerable to a hard outside jam and safety help over the top. Look for blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge opposite the flat route, since the check down blue route is your answer against a quick four man rush that collapses the pocket before the deep routes develop.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion on the yellow receiver to identify man versus zone by watching if a defender follows across the formation.

Attack single high safety shells by hitting the corner route (red) on an isolated cornerback, since the choice route occupies the middle defenders.

Against zone shells with two deep safeties, hot route the Y-Choice receiver to sit down in the soft spot between the flat and deep zones for an easy completion.

Use this on 2nd and medium to 3rd and long since the deep corner and choice combo need time to develop but the check down flat route protects against a sack.

Pair this call with Mtn PA Boot Corner or Mtn PA Boot Cross Y-Corner in the same set to keep the defense guessing between play action and straight drop back corner routes off similar formation looks.
