Breakdown

Mtn Slot Option is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Flex Close that shows a mountain motion man crossing the formation before the snap to the strong side. Off the snap, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers while the tight end to that side releases on a corner route breaking outside at ten yards, and the slot defender who motioned runs an option route working underneath. The play beats zone coverage by stretching the field vertically and horizontally while giving the quarterback a built in option read against man defenders on the shallow crosser. Primary progression starts with the option route, then works to the corner route, and finally the deep vertical if a defender bites on the underneath routes.

Defensive Reads

Read the slot defender at the snap since his depth and leverage on the option route tells you man or zone almost instantly. Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety indicates man or Cover 3 which opens the corner route and vertical shot. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, expect the underneath defenders to sink and take away the option route, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the slot will jump the option route, so counter by looking off with your eyes before committing to that throw. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will pressure the quarterback before the corner route develops, so check protection or expect a quick option route dump against known blitz teams.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap since the option route defender will either trail in man or sit in a zone, giving you an instant coverage read.

Attack single high safety shells with the deep vertical route since the corner route and option route will hold the underneath defenders and open a one on one vertical shot.

Hot route the option route to a quicker breakoff against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where underneath defenders sit short, letting your slot man settle before the linebackers can wall him off.

Pair this play with Mtn HB Stretch and Mtn Inside Zone Split in your play calling sequence since the mountain motion look sets up run fits identically, forcing linebackers to respect run action before committing to coverage.

Best used on second and medium or third and short situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage or press looks, since the option route naturally counters press man.
