Mtn Slot Option is a pass play out of Singleback Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) that features a deep option route from the inside slot receiver combined with a corner route from the tight end on the strong side and a deep post from the outside receiver on the weak side. The flexed TE runs an out and up the seam to the sideline, giving a horizontal stretch underneath a vertical shot, while the slot defender executes an option route (in or out breaking read based on coverage) with a checkdown flare underneath. The blocking scheme keeps the offensive line in standard pass protection with the fullback or extra TE available for a chip or stay-in-block, making this a solid man beater when the slot option can break away from a trailing defender, and it doubles as a zone beater with the deep post and corner stretching the safeties. Primary read progression starts with the slot option route, works to the corner route from the flexed TE, and finishes with the deep post as the home run shot.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment, two deep safeties signal a zone shell that favors sitting the option route underneath, while a single high safety suggests man coverage or a blitz look. Watch the slot cornerback depth at the snap, if he sinks into a zone drop rather than mirroring the slot receiver, expect him to jump the option route on an in-cut. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flowing toward the slot option route, that lurk threat can bait the quarterback into an interception if the throw is not put on time. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells can shut this down if the corners squeeze the outside post and the flexed TE corner route into tight windows, forcing the quarterback to check down early. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of this play, so identify overload blitz looks pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on the quick option route.
Usage Tips
Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot cornerback before the snap, if he is playing off man coverage the option route becomes an easy conversion for a first down.
Use motion out of this formation to identify man versus zone coverage before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you have a clean man beat with the option route.
Hot route the fullback or extra blocker into a flat route against blitz-heavy defenses to give the quarterback a quick outlet if the deep routes are covered.
This play works best on third and medium situations where the option route can settle into a soft spot in zone coverage for the conversion.
