From the bunch alignment, the closest receiver runs a quick corner route to clear space underneath while the middle bunch receiver runs a spot route settling into the shallow hole, and the inside receiver runs a flat route to the sideline. The backside X receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers as a hot read against single high looks, while the HB releases into a check release flat route out of the backfield. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender with a high low read, and the primary progression starts with the spot route in the hole, works to the corner route breaking outside, and checks down to the flat and backside vertical if the middle opens up.

Defensive Reads

Check the strong safety depth before the snap since a shallow safety alignment signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this Spot concept is designed to exploit underneath. Watch the curl flat defender at the snap because he has to defend both the flat route and the sit route in the spot concept, and his leverage tells you which route is open. Identify man coverage by looking for a linebacker or safety trailing the bunch receivers in motion or shifted alignment, since press man coverage can jump the flat route and take away the quick option. Pair this play with Bunch Levels or Mtn Snag Under in the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow crossers and the spot concept, forcing linebackers to widen their run fits and hesitate in coverage.

Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on time to the flat or spot route since the corner route takes longer to develop and can be affected by a jumped route from a user controlled cornerback.
