Mtn Return Flood Stick is a bunch based route concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel that combines a flood package to one side with a stick concept, creating high low reads on the flood side while giving the QB a quick underneath answer against tight coverage. The mountain bunch alignment forces defenders to declare man or zone leverage before the snap, making this an effective man beater against off coverage and a zone beater against Cover 3 rotations that leave the flat exposed. The primary read progression starts with the deep flood route to occupy the deep third, works down to the intermediate out or corner breaking route, and finishes with the stick or flat option as the checkdown against a hard close from underneath defenders.
Identify whether the defense is playing man or zone by watching the flat defender's reaction to the bunch release, if he sinks with the flood receiver it is likely zone coverage Against Cover 3 the flood concept overloads the deep third defender, forcing him to choose between the deep out and the corner route, take whichever he leaves open Watch the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, if he drops hard into a zone drop the stick route sitting underneath becomes a high percentage completion User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone can jump the stick route, so be ready to climb the progression to the intermediate flood breaker if you see a defender sitting on the underneath route This concept struggles against a hard cornerback blitz from the bunch side since the flood route needs time to develop, check for overload blitz alignments pre-snap and get the ball out on the stick route immediately if pressure is showing
Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender on the bunch side, if he widens with the flood release you have room to work the stick route underneath for an easy completion
Use motion or a hot route on the backside to hold the single high safety and prevent him from cheating over to help on the flood concept
This play shines on third and short to third and medium since the stick concept gives you a built in answer against blitz pressure that forces a quick decision
Pair this call with Mtn Return Cross Up or Mtn Return Drive Flat from the same formation to keep the defense guessing on which route is the flood versus the drive concept
Against Cover 2 look to layer the deep flood route over the cornerback before the safety can rotate over the top, this is your explosive play window
If the defense shows blitz look to your hot route stick option immediately since it releases fast and beats most nano blitz packages off the bunch
