Mtn Return Cross Up is a bunch-based passing concept out of Shotgun Bunch TE that uses return routes and crossing patterns to manipulate zone drops and confuse man defenders trying to fight through traffic. The bunch alignment creates natural rubs and picks, with receivers returning back to the same side after breaking off crossers to sit down in soft spots against zone or shake loose against trailing man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the return route out of the bunch working back to the throwing side, then works to the deep crosser hunting the middle voids, before checking down to the underneath option releasing from the backfield or trailing tight end route.
Read the cornerback depth over the bunch pre-snap, since a hard press look signals man coverage and the return route becomes a quick win against a defender playing outside leverage Watch the flat and curl defenders after the snap to see if they widen with the bunch release or stay home, which tells you whether the return route will have a throwing lane Identify if the middle linebacker sits in a hook zone or spins to the crosser, since a defense that keeps a linebacker in the throwing window can jump the deep crossing route This play struggles against a heavy Cover 3 buzz where the flat defender sinks and the deep third defender squeezes the crosser, so avoid forcing it into that shell Watch for user blitzers shooting the A or B gap post-snap, since the bunch alignment can leave the quarterback exposed if the protection does not account for a delayed blitzer off the edge
Check the safety alignment pre-snap to determine if you are facing a two-high shell that will sit on the return route or a single-high look that opens up the deep crosser
Use motion or a hot route on the backside receiver to create a two-way go if the defense shows man coverage across the bunch
Against zone shells, hit the return route quickly before the flat defender can sink underneath it, since the rub action from the bunch buys just enough time
Pair this play with Mtn Mesh or Mtn Snag Under in the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossers that stay flat and crossers that return back to the trips side
Best called on second and medium or third and short since the return concept develops quickly and does not require a deep drop from the quarterback
Use play action or run action tags from Mtn HB Stretch and Escort HB Split Zone earlier in the drive to set up linebackers biting on the run fake before dialing this up
