PA Verticals out of Shotgun Bunch TE uses play-action to hold the linebackers before releasing three receivers vertically up the field, with the two inside bunch receivers running seams and the third receiver pushing an outside vertical that breaks toward the sideline near the top of its stem. This is a classic four verts shell designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep safeties and attacking the seams before help arrives. The primary read progression starts with the inside seam route off the bunch, then works to the middle seam, and finally to the breaking vertical on the outside if the safeties bite on the play-action fake.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety depth and spacing, since two safeties sitting shallow or crashing down signal an easy alert to the seam routes. Watch for linebackers cheating their drops toward the bunch alignment, which tells you the defense expects play-action and may jump the underneath routes. Post-snap, key the deep safeties: if they widen to the outside vertical, the inside seam window opens immediately for a big gain. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed on the seams, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz packages that lack deep support. Watch for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the middle of the field, since a disciplined zone drop underneath the seams can bait a risky throw and lead to a user pick.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap whether the defense shows two deep safeties or a single high safety, since this concept is built to punish both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells.
Sell the play-action fake by holding the ball on the fake handoff long enough for the linebackers to step up before you climb the pocket.
Against Cover 2, target the inside seam route because the safeties have to widen to cover the outside vertical, opening a throwing lane between the hashes.
Against Cover 3, work the middle seam against the deep third defender or the outside vertical if the corner bails into a deep zone drop.
Pair this play with Bunch Levels or Mesh Dig on early downs to set up the same bunch look, then hit PA Verticals on a passing down once the defense starts jumping short routes.
