Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he bites hard on the run fake the seam routes will open immediately behind him. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high leaves the deep corner route isolated on the corner with no safety help over the top. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since he can jump the underneath slide or flat route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the bunch is the easiest matchup, look for the corner route to win against trail technique. Zone blitzes with five or six man pressure can be an issue if the slide protection gets beat off the edge, so check protection or use the checkdown quickly against known blitz teams.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball and eyeing the linebackers before your first pass read, since a slow fake against aggressive run defense can create explosive seam shots.

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are keyed on stopping the run out of 11 personnel bunch sets.

If the corner jumps the flat or the slide route pre-snap, hot route the far seam runner into a skinny post to attack the vacated middle of the field.

Pair this with Boomerang HB Off Tackle or HB Off Tackle from the same set so the run fake carries real threat and linebackers stay honest on early downs.

Watch the deep safety shell before the snap, if you see a two high look, check into the corner route first since it will have room to work against a rotated corner.
