Mtn Snag Under features pre-snap motion from the bunch alignment that resets the trips look before the ball is snapped. On the snap, the outside receiver runs a corner route to clear the top of the zone, the middle receiver settles into a snag/hitch sitting underneath around 5 yards, and the inside receiver runs an under route across the field to the opposite flat while the backside X runs a deep dig to hold the far side safety. This is a classic Snag concept built as a Cover 3 beater, using the corner route to stress the deep third defender while the snag and under routes create a horizontal stretch on the underneath zone defenders. The primary read progression starts with the flat/snag combo read on the play side, then works to the under route crossing underneath as a check down against zone drops, with the deep dig available if the defense rolls into a two high shell.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corner over the bunch pre-snap, if he bails deep immediately you are likely facing Cover 3 and the snag and under combo will have room underneath. Key the flat defender after the snap, if he widens with the corner route the snag route sits in the vacated zone for an easy completion. Look for a linebacker spying or shadowing the motion man, this is a strong indicator of man coverage and should push your read to the under route working away from traffic. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties, the corner route gets squeezed and the play relies more heavily on the underneath snag and under routes to move the ball. Identify blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the under route crossing the field can act as a natural outlet against pressure looks and nano blitzes.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to confirm whether the defense is playing man or zone, if the motion man is followed across the formation you are getting man coverage and should lean on the under route to create separation.

This play is best called on second or third and medium situations where the snag hitch can move the chains quickly against a Cover 3 shell.

If the safeties show a two high shell pre-snap, prioritize the backside dig route since the deep corner route will not have room to work against a shaded coverage.

Pair this play with Mtn Return Flood Stick or Mtn Spacing in your play calling sequence, since both attack similar underneath zones and force linebackers to widen their drops after seeing Snag Under a few times.

Hot route the under route into a deeper crossing route against teams sitting hard on shallow zone drops, this adds an extra layer of difficulty for user linebackers trying to sink and cover the flat.
