PA Boot Over is a play-action rollout concept out of Bunch TE that pulls the QB to the boot side away from the bunch alignment. The bunch releases three vertical stems: the outer receiver breaks into a corner route, the middle bunch man runs a deep dig that settles over the middle, and the inner bunch receiver climbs a skinny post that also works vertically through the seam. The tight end runs a short flat route into the boot flow while the fullback area shows a checkdown release underneath, giving the QB a layered read from deep corner to intermediate dig to the flat. This is primarily a play-action man beater that stresses conflicted linebackers and safeties who have to respect the run fake before turning to cover the crossing dig and post.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake, the dig route sitting behind them becomes the first read. Identify single high versus two high pre-snap, single high safeties are more likely to get sucked toward the run fake, opening up the corner route on the outside. Key the flat defender on the boot side, if he widens with the tight end, the underneath window for the drag or checkdown tightens and the QB should climb the ladder to the dig or post. Recognize man coverage by watching defensive backs mirror the bunch release without turning to the ball, this is when the skinny post and corner route combo creates natural rub separation. Beware of a delayed contain blitz off the edge on the boot side, if the edge defender stays home instead of crashing on the run fake, the rollout throwing window shrinks fast and the QB needs to get the ball out on time.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake fully before rolling out, since the play action window is what opens the dig and post against man coverage.

Use this on early downs like first and second and short when the defense is showing heavy run support or crashing linebackers, since the boot action pulls flow away from those defenders.

Check safety depth before the snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting still instead of stepping up on the fake, be ready to hit the flat quickly since the corner and dig will be capped.

Hot route the flat to a shallow drag if you are facing a hard edge blitz on the boot side, this gives the QB a faster answer than waiting on the rollout.
