Slot Option lines up out of a bunch look with three receivers stacked tight to the formation and an outside receiver split wide running a shallow drag across the field. Out of the bunch, two receivers push vertically up the seam and one runs the option route, breaking off his stem based on the leverage of the underneath defender. The primary read is the option route out of the bunch, working from the option read to the two vertical seam routes if the defense sits underneath, with the drag from the split receiver serving as a checkdown against zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check whether the defense has a linebacker or nickel defender shaded directly over the bunch since his depth tells you if the option route will break in or out. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone underneath the bunch since that lurk threat is designed to jump the option route break. Cover 3 and other zone shells with soft underneath drops tend to give the option route room to settle, so look for the flat defender to widen and take the throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the bunch is where this play hits fastest, since the option route can break away from the defender's leverage for a clean pickup. Tight man coverage combined with an inside blitz off the edge can disrupt the timing before the option route develops, so account for pressure off the strong side.

Usage Tips

Key the underneath defender over the bunch before the snap since his leverage dictates how the option route breaks and whether he sits inside or slips outside.

Use this on third and short or third and medium since the option route naturally settles into soft spots against zone drops and creates immediate separation against man coverage.

If you see man coverage with no help over the bunch, trust the option route to win off the break and take the quick throw rather than waiting on the verticals to develop.

Pair this with Mtn Slot Flood or Bunch Levels from the same set so the defense has to respect both an option concept and a flood concept out of the identical bunch alignment.

Against zone shells, use the drag route as your hot read if the underneath defenders crash the bunch and vacate the shallow crossing lane.
