Read Option out of Shotgun Bunch TE is a true zone read run play with the bunch alignment (TE, WR, WR stacked tight to one side) crashing down to seal the edge while the offensive line blocks down on inside zone. The QB reads the backside defensive end off the mesh point with the HB, either handing off on the zone track or pulling it to attack the edge himself. This is a pure run play designed to beat light boxes and overaggressive edge defenders, with no pass option built in, so the primary read progression is simply DE crash or squeeze to determine give or keep.

Defensive Reads

As the defense, key the mesh point immediately and crash hard with the backside DE to force the give every time, since this play has no pass threat attached. Spill the run outside with your linebackers by staying square and not overpursuing, forcing the ball back into pursuit rather than letting the QB bounce it clean. Watch for the bunch alignment cutting off a natural run fit defender, so rotate a safety down into the box pre-snap against heavier personnel to restore numbers. User the backside DE manually and stay disciplined on the mesh instead of committing early, since a scripted crash animation can be baited into a big QB keep. Man coverage on the bunch receivers can leave the edge blocker matchups favorable for the offense, so zone shells with a hard edge set linebacker shut this down more effectively.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six or fewer defenders in the box since the bunch alignment removes an extra blocker from the run fit.

Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap for wide alignment or crashing tendencies, since a DE who consistently squeezes down is a green light to pull the ball every time.

Use this in early down situations, first and second and short to medium, to stay ahead of the sticks and keep defenses honest between run and pass.

Pair this with Boomerang HB Off Tackle or HB Counter Lead from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes out of an identical bunch look.

If the CPU or opponent starts sending edge pressure to take away the keep, hot route the playside bunch receiver into a quick out or seal block to slow the corner blitz.
