Pre-snap motion adjusts the bunch alignment, and at the snap the two outside receivers from the bunch run a deep dig and a corner route that split the field horizontally while a third receiver clears underneath on a shallow drag through the middle. The single receiver to the boundary side runs a deep vertical route to hold the safety, and the HB releases into a flat/check release out of the backfield for a safety valve. This is a man beater designed to stress a single defender across multiple levels, with the primary read progression going deep dig first, then the corner route, and finally settling to the HB in the flat if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker or safety assigned to the motion man before the snap, since his reaction reveals man or zone coverage instantly. Key the deep safety depth at the snap, because a single high safety who bites on the shallow drag opens a clean throwing lane for the dig route behind him. If corners squat hard on the bunch release points, that usually signals zone coverage underneath, which means you should progress quickly to the corner route or dump it to the HB. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since he can jump the drag route and bait the quarterback into a turnover. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, this play struggles unless the corner route wins outside leverage quickly, so be ready to check down to the HB rather than force a throw into a sinking zone defender.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since defenders following the motion man across the formation confirm man coverage and open up the dig and corner routes immediately.

Take the deep dig first against single high safety looks since it splits the middle of the field before the safety can rotate over.

If the defense shows two high safeties, look to the corner route sooner since the dig will run into a defender sitting in the deep middle third.

Use the HB check release as your answer against blitzes, especially when the offensive line shows a hot route protection issue, since it gets the ball out fast and picks up positive yardage.
