TE Corner out of Shotgun Bunch TE stacks three receivers tight to one side with a lone HB releasing into a flat/wheel route on the backside. Defensive Reads
Watch for a cornerback pressed outside the bunch pre-snap, which signals man coverage and tells you the corner route will likely win on the rub. Key the free safety depth at the snap: if he stays deep middle in a single-high shell, the corner route has soft coverage in the flat corner window. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flying downhill toward the bunch, since a lurking linebacker or nickel defender can jump the flag/out route and undercut the throw. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, expect the corner route to run into a safety over the top, so progress to the HB swing or the deep post as the zone stretches horizontally. Recognize blitz packages sending extra rushers off the edge, since the HB releasing to the flat becomes your emergency valve and hot read if protection breaks down before the corner route develops.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with a defender shaded outside the bunch, since the natural rub from the stack will spring the corner route open against man coverage.
Look for single-high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) before the snap, as the corner route will attack the void behind the cornerback and in front of the rotating safety.
Hot route the inside bunch receiver into a sit route or spot if you diagnose zone coverage underneath, giving you a quick answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.
Use this play on 2nd or 3rd and medium situations where you need a chunk gain, since the corner route hits the intermediate to deep zone that stresses zone defenders.
Pair this with Bunch Levels or Mesh from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between quick-game answers and the deeper corner shot, forcing linebackers to respect multiple route depths from the same bunch look.
