Cheat TE Hitch HB Seam lines up from Bunch TE with a pre-snap motion piece kicking one of the bunch receivers across the formation to the opposite numbers. Off the snap, the two outside receivers on the motion side run deep gold routes to the sideline (a deep out and a corner-breaking comeback look), while the backside runs a red seam from the slot and a blue seam from the halfback releasing out of the backfield, with a short yellow hitch sitting underneath from the remaining bunch receiver. This is a man beater built on vertical stress: the two seams up the field occupy the middle of the field defenders and safeties, while the hitch gives a built-in sit route against off coverage or blitz. Primary read progression starts with the HB seam matchup out of the backfield (look for a linebacker or slower defender in coverage), then works to the TE seam up the middle, and checks down to the hitch if the seams are blanketed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense follows the bunch motion man to man or stays put in zone shell, since this dictates whether the HB seam or hitch route becomes the priority read. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers get beaten easily by the HB and TE seam routes splitting the hashes before they can drop into their zone. Cover 3 with a single high safety struggles against this concept because the two seam routes stretch the middle hook defender and force a horizontal versus vertical conflict. Cover 2 shells with aggressive flat corners can be exploited on the HB seam since the flat defender is not equipped to run vertically with the back. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle can jump both seam routes if the quarterback stares down the read, so use eye manipulation with a quick look to the hitch first before committing to the seam throws.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone: if the defender follows across the formation it is man coverage and you should trust the HB seam matchup against a linebacker.
Attack this play on second and medium or third and short to medium since the hitch gives a safe underneath option if the deep seams are covered.
If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 shell), target the HB seam quickly before the safety can rotate down, since the seam splits the hash before the flat defender can carry it.
