Boomerang PA Y Wheel is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Bunch TE that attacks the boundary off a run fake. The bunch releases into a wheel and deep cross combo: the inside receiver wheels up the sideline from the backfield alignment while the TE runs a deep crossing route underneath, working from one side of the formation to a deep out breaking route on the far side, and the third bunch receiver runs a shallow out. The offensive line sells run blocking on the play-action fake before sliding into pass protection. This is a man beater built to spring the wheel route for a big play against man coverage that bites on the run fake, with the crossing route as the primary read if the wheel gets jumped, and the shallow out as the checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
On defense, honor the run fake with your linebackers but do not let them commit hard downhill, since biting on the play action opens the wheel route for an explosive gain. Identify the bunch alignment pre-snap and assign a defender who can carry the wheel route vertically, ideally a safety or a linebacker with elite speed rather than a slower inside linebacker. Watch for man coverage on the bunch as a red flag; if you are in man against this formation, user the defender assigned to the wheel route and stay on top rather than trailing. Zone coverage with a deep half safety over the top and a linebacker sitting in the flat can take away both the wheel and the shallow out, forcing the quarterback into the crosser where a lurking linebacker can jump the throw. Disguise blitzes carefully since a delayed blitz can wreck the play-action rollout timing, but overcommitting numbers to the box leaves the wheel and crosser combo wide open behind a vacated middle of the field.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners in press or shaded alignment on the bunch since the wheel route is designed to exploit man matchups on linebackers or safeties who cannot stay in the hip pocket.
Use the run fake to freeze linebackers, then immediately scan the sideline for the wheel route as your first read before working the deep crosser.
Call this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more willing to sell out on the run look, since play-action is far less effective on third and long against obvious pass coverages.
Pair this with Boomerang HB Off Tackle or Escort HB Split Zone earlier in a series so the defense keys the same backfield action and personnel motion, making the play-action fake here more believable.
If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap indicating zone, be ready to hot route the wheel man into a shorter option route or check down quickly to the shallow out rather than forcing the deep shot.
