Breakdown

Curl Flat Corner out of Shotgun Bunch TE stacks three receivers to the left with the bunch WR running a deep corner route, the TE working an option/curl underneath it, and the inside bunch WR clearing out on a shallow crosser to the opposite flat. The backside X runs a corner route from the numbers while the RB releases to the flat then bends upfield on a wheel. This is a zone beater built to stress the flat and curl/hook defender with the corner route stretching the deep quarter or half, and the primary read progression starts with the RB flat to TE curl, then works to the backside corner if the safety bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing: two safeties split evenly at 10-12 yards usually signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which leaves the flat vulnerable to the RB release. Watch the cornerback aligned over the bunch stack: if he sits low and hard on the curl route, that is a strong indicator of Cover 3 zone drop, opening the corner route behind him. Post-snap, track the flat defender (corner or nickel) first: if he stays flat-footed reading run or bites on the curl, the RB and TE combo will be wide open underneath. Look for a user-controlled safety rotating late to double the corner route, which signals the defense recognizes the concept and is selling out to stop the deep shot, leaving intermediate zones exposed. This concept struggles against man coverage with an underneath robber or a Cover 1 lurk defender sitting in the curl-flat window, since he can jump both short routes and force a low percentage throw to the corner.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since this concept is built to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenders who cannot cover both the flat and the corner route with one player.

If you see Cover 2, key the flat defender: if he sinks to the curl, hit the RB in the flat immediately for a quick, easy gain before the corner ever fully develops.

Against Cover 3, the corner route from the bunch stack is your money throw because it attacks the deep third defender who has to respect the underneath curl and flat combo first.

Use this play on second or third and medium distances where defenses are likely to sit in zone shells, and pair it with Bunch Levels or Mtn TE Corner from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick horizontal reads and vertical shots.

If the defense starts jumping the flat route with a linebacker spy or lurk, sequence into Verts Y Delay or PA Verticals to punish that aggressive underneath jump with a deep shot.
