HB Off Tackle out of Shotgun Bunch TE is a designed downhill run play that attacks the edge just outside the tackle box. The offensive line and TE from the bunch set combo block at the point of attack, sealing the edge defender while the HB takes the handoff and presses the mesh point before working off tackle for a lane. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression is the RB reading the play side double team block, then bouncing outside if the edge is sealed or cutting inside on a backside cutback if the alley is clogged.
Presnap, identify if the defense is stacking the box with a safety cheating down, since that is the biggest indicator this run gets shut down. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting flat footed reading the mesh point they will fill the off tackle gap fast. Key the edge defender's leverage, if he is playing outside contain the cutback lane inside becomes the better track for the runner. Man coverage on the bunch receivers pulls extra defenders away from the box, which favors this run, while zone shells with underneath defenders sitting in run support kill the play. Watch for a user controlled defender flying downhill off the edge presnap, that is a strong indicator of a run blitz designed to beat this exact concept.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle area.
Look for defenses that spread out to cover the bunch receivers presnap, since that pulls a linebacker or safety out of the run fit and opens the off tackle lane.
Use the right stick to set your blocking angle and manually take on the edge defender if the CPU blocker gets beat off the snap.
Pair this with Bunch Levels and Mtn Fork Y-Corner from the same set so defenses cannot sit on run keys presnap without conceding pass windows.
Run this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, since it is not designed to convert long third downs on its own.
Mix in HB Counter Lead and Inside Zone from the same personnel package to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction.
