Inside Switch is a play-action man beater out of Shotgun Bunch TE with 11 personnel. Off the play fake, the bunch releases into a switch concept: the inside receiver runs a seam up the middle while the slot works a shallow slant/flat combo underneath, creating natural rub traffic against man coverage. On the backside, the isolated X runs a go route to hold the corner deep, the flanker in the bunch runs an out toward the sideline, and the TE from the bunch releases into a flat route, giving the flood concept horizontal stretch on that side. Your primary read starts with the seam route against man leverage, then works to the backside out and flat if the safety squeezes the middle of the field.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker and single-high safety immediately after the snap since they determine whether the seam route is a live throwing window. If you see press man on the bunch receivers pre-snap, expect the switch release to win quickly, so user the deepest defender to help trail the seam. Watch for Cover 3 zone drops where the flat defender and curl-to-flat defender squeeze the backside flood, since that combo can bait the QB into a contested throw to the out route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be an issue since the play-action fake holds the QB in the pocket longer, so spy or user a defender near the line if you suspect a nano blitz. If the defense rotates a safety down to the bunch side post-snap, that usually signals man coverage or a rat in the middle of the field, which should push your read to the backside flat instead of the contested seam.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone shell by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch side. Against man coverage, trust the switch release to create natural picks and target the seam route as your first read since the rub concept disrupts man leverage. Against zone, especially Cover 3, look to the backside flood combo of the out and flat since the seam becomes harder to fit if a zone defender sits underneath. Use this play on early downs or third and medium since the play-action fake needs run respect to hold linebackers and prevent a fast collapse on the shallow routes. Pair this with Mtn PA Cross Switch or Bunch Levels in the same set to keep the defense guessing between switch releases and levels concepts off similar bunch alignment. If the defense starts jumping the seam route after seeing it once, sequence into Mtn Snag Under or Triple Out from this set to attack the same bunch look with different spacing.
