Breakdown

HB Draw out of Shotgun Bunch TE sells a dropback pass look before handing off to the HB on a delayed run through the interior. The four vertical routes from the bunch receivers and the single wide receiver occupy every level of the defense, pulling linebackers and defensive backs into deep coverage drops and freezing the pass rush for a beat. The offensive line sets up in a pass-blocking posture initially before transitioning to run blocks, and the primary read is simply to let the delay develop, find the crease as the interior defenders bite on the play fake, and follow the RB's vision through the hole.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for stacked linebackers near the LOS since they are the primary threat to blow up the delay before it develops. Look for a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell with safeties bailing deep, this indicates the defense is respecting the verticals and will be slow to react to the run action. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and edge rushers, if they are selling hard upfield off the snap the interior lanes will open up quickly for the HB. User-controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or spying the backfield can jump the draw immediately, so avoid this call against defenses that show mug looks or delayed blitz disguises. A hard inside blitz or A gap pressure pre-snap negates the blocking scheme entirely and should send you to a quicker hitting concept instead.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense shows heavy blitz packages or aggressive pass rush tendencies since the delay action punishes overpursuing defensive linemen.

Use it on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium to stay unpredictable after establishing the Bunch TE pass concepts like Bunch Levels or Mtn Mesh.

Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting a quick pass they will get washed out of the play by their own momentum.

Do not spam this play back to back, defenses that see the four verticals release combined with a delayed mesh point will start keying the draw fake instantly.

Pair this with Mtn PA Cross Switch or PA Boot Over earlier in a series so the defense respects the vertical stems and stays honest before you call the draw.
