Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker's initial step after the snap. If he bites hard on the run fake, the deep vertical and switch crosser both have room to work behind him. Man coverage defenders who try to jump the switch release early are vulnerable to the natural rub created by the bunch, so this beats Cover 1 and Cover 3 man match looks. Zone defenses that sink two deep safeties over the top can take away the vertical shot, so if you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap, prioritize the crosser and flat combo instead of forcing the deep ball. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing lane. If he sits and waits on the cross, check to the flat route instead of forcing the throw into that window. Fast flowing linebackers who diagnose play action quickly can undercut the flat route, so if the defense has shown quick pattern match tendencies, favor the switch crosser or the deep shot instead.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are still respecting the run fake off Bunch TE personnel.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. If you see a single high safety cheating to the vertical route's side, look to hit the switch crosser underneath instead.

Against man coverage, trust the pick action created by the switch release. Defenders trailing the cross often get rubbed off, so throw with anticipation rather than waiting for full separation.

Pair this play with Mtn Return Cross Up or Mtn Fork Y-Corner in the same set so the defense has to respect both the switch release and traditional out breaking routes off identical formation and motion.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pressure pre-snap, get the ball out quick to the flat route since the play action fake will hold linebackers for an extra half second and buy time.
