Mtn PA Cross Switch is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Bunch TE that fakes the run to hold the second level before working a switch release crossing concept. Off the play fake, the outside receiver from the bunch runs a deep vertical up the numbers while the middle bunch receiver works underneath on a deep crosser toward that same sideline, creating a natural pick and switch against man coverage. The inside receiver from the bunch runs a quick out to the flat and a tight end or slot piece runs a shallow drag underneath, giving the quarterback a layered read from the deep vertical down to the crosser and out to the flat as checkdowns clear out underneath defenders. This is primarily a man beater built to spring the crosser wide open off the switch release, though the flat and drag give you answers versus zone drops too.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with tight alignment on the bunch receivers, since this play is built to exploit man matchups through the switch release. Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety suggests man under coverage which plays right into the crosser's window created by the switch. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any underneath zone droppers, if they sit on the flat or drag route it opens a bigger throwing lane for the crosser working across the field. Beware disguised zone blitzes off the edge, since the play-action fake holds the quarterback in the pocket a beat longer and can be vulnerable to a well timed nano blitz. If the defense plays two-high shells with off corners, the crosser may run into a lurking linebacker or safety rotation, so be ready to reset to the flat or drag as the checkdown outlet.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in play-action favorable counts like second and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators such as press corners or a single high safety, since the switch release is designed to create natural traffic and separation against man defenders.
Your first read is the deep vertical from the bunch, but live on the crosser as your primary target since the switch release usually gets him open in the intermediate zone.
If the defense shows two-high shell or soft zone, hot route the flat route into a quicker out or check down to the drag underneath rather than forcing the crosser into a zone defender's lurk window.
